HAFT Team activities February and March 2023

THEME: “FOCUS ON YOUR HEALTH”
ELEMENTS: HEALTH TALKS AND GENERAL BODY CHECK-UP CLINICS.

A preparation meeting was held on 3rd February 2023 at FINS Medical University, Fort Portal, Uganda. Members of the HAFT team got together to plan how best to conduct their upcoming outreach program, and sought advice and guidance on the proposed activities.

A few weeks later, on 4th March, a ‘Project Awareness’ meeting was held to ensure that the team members had the knowledge and skills to carry out health education talks and physiological measurements (eg. blood pressure, vital signs and blood glucose levels)

On 12th March this team carried out their first health education talk at Kiburara Church of Uganda, where many people attended the HAFT health education talks, 36 males , 62 females and many children. 15 people were found with high blood pressure above 156/95 mmhg, 17 with a borderline between 140/90 to 155/100 mmhg. 9 people were found with high glucose levels above 10 g/dl and advice was given accordingly. The need for good sanitation and the prevention of disease was the key message.

On 2nd April the team started further health visits to the community. They visited Hakibale sub county at Kiburara Catholic church, where many people attended the health education talks, 47 males , 92 females and many children. 41 people were found with high blood pressure above 156/95 mmhg, and 27 with a borderline between 140/90 to 155/100 mmhg. 23 people were found with high glucose levels above 10 g/dl And advice was given accordingly. Good sanitation, and disease prevention measures were again emphasized.

The associated costs for these health talks and health checks were as follows: Transport etc: 320,000 Ug shillings ( $85 approx) Glucometer strips: 120,000 Ug shillings ($32 approx) Blood Pressure Monitor 150,000 Ug shillings ($40 approx) TOTAL: 590,000 Ug shillings ( $158 or £125 approx)
